Awaken from hibernation and embrace the Spring Equinox with an open heart. Shedding winter’s coat our body and mind need to re-energize and we must encourage circulation on all levels of being. As we detoxify, refresh and tone, cleaning out winter’s remains we welcome a “lighter body of being.” To aid in this process we call on an essential oil in the “Rutaceae family.” This month Elizabeth Van Buren brings you Citrus x paradisi—commonly known as Grapefruit.

First recorded growing in Barbados in 1750, Grapefruit was brought to Florida in 1823. Not until the 19th century did this citrus fruit gain popularity. Cold pressing the fruits rind produces a light, sweet, energizing oil. Astringent, antiseptic, anti-bacterial and diuretic are few of the jewels offered to essential oil users. Lymphatic massage with Grapefruit oil helps toxins release and drain from tissue cells. Digestive issues, edema, skin congestion, headaches and the liver all benefit from this oils application.

Good quality Grapefruit oil’s GC/MS will show a large limonene peak of 90%, with citronellal, geraniol, citral, and neral [Shirley Price, The Aromatherapy Work Book (Hammersmith, London: Thorsons, 1993) 54-5]. Contradictions include possible phototoxicity. When in doubt, air on the side of caution.

For an inspirational perfume blend begin by combining 4 drops Grapefruit, 1 drop Frankincense, 3 drops Rosemary and 2 drops Spearmint. Measure 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (almond, apricot or jojoba) and 1 teaspoon of alcohol (Vodka), using a small funnel into your bottle. Add the essential oils one drop at a time. Shake the mixture well after each drop is added. Tightly put the lid on and store in a cool, dark place for a minimum of 12 days. Shake at least 3 times a day. Apply on pulse points.
